The 1970 Playmouth Barracuda sits on a rotisserie in the body shop, its shell coated in smooth gray high-build primer. A skilled restorer applies a thin black guide coat, and under sharp raking side lights, every subtle wave, pinhole, and low spot instantly appears as dark streaks and patches.
With long, rigid sanding blocks and flexible durablocks wrapped in 220- then 320-grit paper, he works methodically—precise, overlapping strokes focused only on the highlighted imperfections. Fine primer dust is captured instantly by the attached vacuum extractor, keeping the surface clean for constant inspection.
Stroke by stroke, the black guide coat disappears, revealing perfectly flat, laser-straight panels. The iconic coke-bottle curves of the hood, doors, and quarters gradually achieve mirror-like uniformity. Fresh guide coat is reapplied to stubborn areas until nothing remains—no waves, no scratches, no defects.
