On June 10, 1944 - just four days after the D-Day landings in Normandy - the rural French village of Oradour-sur-Glane witnessed one of the most horrific acts of the Second World War.
As the 2nd SS Panzer Division Das Reich moved north to support German forces in Normandy, they arrived at Oradour. Within two hours they had rounded up all the villagers, holding them in groups in the church, barns, and several other buildings.
At 4pm they opened fire, killing 643 innocent men, women, and children. To hide their crime, they then set fire to the bodies and buildings, razing Oradour to the ground.
Today, Oradour stands as it was left 81 years ago, the cars, cafés, shops, houses, schools, church, and personal items all serving as a permanent reminder of the horrors of war.
It’s a place of powerful memories and remembrance for the lost village. By sharing our films from Oradour we hope to ensure more people are aware of the people who lost their lives in this quiet village.
In this film we take you along the streets, inside the houses, shops, cafes, barns, and church, and reveal what the site looks like today, showing you the site up close and with amazing aerial views.
