If you’re in Istanbul, and the weather’s nice, consider taking the ferry from city out to the Princes’ Islands. They've long been coastal vacation destinations in the Sea of Marmara.
From the Kabatas terminal in Istanbul, the ferries leave every hour or so.
Up on the board, we’re taking the 11:05 boat to the biggest, and farthest island, Buyukada.
It’s just $3 each way.
There’s no need to buy a ticket. Just tap your credit card and walk into the waiting area.
About 10 minutes before departure, they’ll open the gates and you’ll walk to the boat. Don’t be late because the ferries seem to run on time here.
You can choose to sit inside or outside once on board.
Get comfortable, because it’ll be about an hour and 45-minute ride. You could get off earlier at one of the closer islands.
The ferry will drop you off at the center of town. It’s very pretty, and full of shops and restaurants to check out.
Walking around the island, you’ll find huge old mansions, most of which are still in great shape and used as private homes or hotels.
There are almost no vehicles on the islands.
There are a few electric buses, golf carts, and scooters.
A lot of people rent bikes to ride the 16-kilometer loop around the island. Along the way, you’ll stop at cafes and restaurants with gorgeous views.
You can also hike down to different beaches.
Back in town, you’ll be ready for a meal at one of the coastal restaurants, before checking the ferry boards to coordinate a departure to head back to Istanbul.
