You seem to be of that opinion that orthodox mystics of old were very developed humans with sufficient knowledge of the total spiritual evolution of man. The writings and research of, for example, Ken Wilber, the danish sage Martinus, A H Almaas, Sri Aurobindo, Dr Paul Brunton, Manly P Hall and The Pathwork of Eva Pierrakos draws maps of human consciousness and developmental stages that shows that mystical states and contemplative traditions are anything but complete - cosmically speaking.These teachings I mention spends quite a lot of time dealing with explaining that spiritual development for the modern man is not at all the same as for 2.000 years ago, or even 500 years ago. I think perhaps there is a 'middle way' on the quest to the heart of christianity, where the gnostic, orthodox and traditional teachings are both reconciled and honored, and also being able to embrace and participate with the modern spiritual and psychological research.
