On Christ the King Sunday, the Lectionary challenges us to look beyond the manger and confront the King who reigns from a cross, disrupting our conventional ideas of power. Examining Luke 23:33-43, we discover that Jesus’ true crimes were his radical actions for economic justice and liberation, which threatened the imperial status quo. This redefines Paradise not as a future reward in heaven, but as the reality of grace and justice we are called to embody here and now, demonstrated in Jesus’ final act of welcoming the marginalized criminal. Ultimately, to proclaim Christ as King is a commitment to tireless grace and actively building aKingdom of equality and mercy on Earth.
