Here is the Algoma Conveyor seen departing from Duluth, Minnesota on January 12, 2023. She had delivered a load of salt she picked up in Goderich, Ontario. Half of her load was first delivered to Thunder Bay and the second half was delivered to Compass Minerals in Duluth. I captured a few seconds of her unloading salt to begin the video. There were points in the unloading process where it seemed the wind was blowing away more salt than what was hitting the pile. I guess that's one way to keep the harbor from freezing up! After unloading was done, the Conveyor backed away from Compass Minerals, made a 180 degree pivot to line up with the Duluth shipping canal, and then made her way out onto Lake Superior... bound again for Goderich to load more salt.
This is the first appearance of the Algoma Conveyor on my channel. I debated uploading this video, as it does have some "issues" with how it was recorded. But since I hadn't featured the Conveyor before... and because she gave a nice salute on her way out... I figured it was worth uploading.
The 740-foot Algoma Conveyor was built in 2018 and is one of three Equinox Class ships with a rear-mounted self-unloading system. She entered service in April 2019. She is powered by one 7-cylinder Sulzer diesel engine that generates 11,140 bhp, giving her a top speed of 16.1 mph. She has a cargo carrying capacity of 39,400 tons that she carries in five cargo holds. Her self-unloading system can discharge up to 5,400 metric tons per hour.
