Did you know there are over 1,000 named fig varieties in cultivation? Some of them are very similar if not the same. Black Madeira is in this camp with names like Black Madeira UCD, Black Madeira KK, Violeta, and Figo Preto. While I am not growing all of these variations, I am growing both Black Madeira UCD and Figo Preto. In this video, I share a side by side comparison of the figs and discussion on some differences. While DNA tests can show if two figs have the same markers, they can't show subtle differences from epigenetics. Knowing these subtle differences are an important consideration when selecting which variant to grow in your climate.
