The dementia stages are accurate, and still wildly misleading. Not because they’re wrong, but because they don’t measure the parts of dementia caregiving that break caregivers the most.

If you’ve ever thought, “They said we were in this stage… so why is this happening?” you didn’t misunderstand dementia. You were given an incomplete map.

In this video, I explain what the dementia stages don’t track, emotional distress, fear, nervous system overload, and why behaviors often feel intense long before memory looks severe. You’ll learn why behaviors don’t follow neat stages, why emotional systems can decline before memory does, why behaviors often show up most with the safest person, and why the same stage can look completely different from one day to the next.

I’m Dr. Camille Sinclair, a neuropsychologist and dementia care specialist. I created this video to explain what caregivers are rarely told, not because you failed to understand dementia, but because the charts were never built for the emotional reality of caregiving.
