Summer’s Almost Gone was recorded sometime between January and May of 1968. This song was sort of Jim’s first batch of songs. They had played it many times before at clubs and at the Matrix in 1967. My guess is that the original backing track the band recorded had Robby on his slide guitar, John on his drums Doug Lubahn on the bass and Ray on his Vox. This is because he always recorded the organs first and the Gibson part of this song is so complex it would’ve been tricky for him to keep up with the rest of the band, that and the tone of the organ probably made it harder for him to hear over the other instruments. The Vox however, is very easy to hear. The Vox in this song is completely buried but some isolated tracks have revealed this part in its full detail. I replicated this part pretty much note for note. I’ve also discovered that Ray plays 2 pianos. One pans to the left and the other to the right. Ray adds a spooky element to it by using his Gibson G-101 organ with an almost whistling type sound. This cover is almost entirely note-for-note.
