Henry VIII’s VICAR FROM Hell
During the reign of King Henry VIII, there were many eccentric courtiers who were close to the King, trying to get favour in the notorious Tudor monarch’s eyes. People such as Thomas Cromwell and Sir Thomas More would wish for supremacy in the eyes of the King, and to be looked favourably on by the King meant a number of things. Someone could secure a rather respected and sought after role at court, and be rewarded financially and territorially through grants of land bequeathed by Henry VIII. But there was one man who was prominent inside the infamous Tudor King’s court who gained the nickname ‘The Vicar of Hell.’ Sir Francis Bryan was seen as an outrageous and shocking man who was a Chief Gentleman of the Privy Chamber to Henry VIII, and he was the man who helped Thomas Cromwell to bring about the downfall and execution of Anne Boleyn.
