Gibraltar – British Quirk Meets Spanish Sun

Welcome back to our campervan adventure through Europe! Today, we’re in Gibraltar, a tiny British territory at the southernmost tip of Spain. It’s got red phone booths, English pubs, and fish & chips—right next to palm trees, Spanish sunshine, and wild monkeys! Let’s explore this quirky mix of cultures and climb to the top of the famous Rock of Gibraltar!

We parked our campervan in La Línea de la Concepción, just 20 minutes walking distance from the Spanish - British border at a regular street park but there is also a camperstop nearby if you need camper services. We do not advise crossing the border with your motorhome as Gibraltar is quite small and you will have a hard time finding a proper parking space.

Arriving in Gibraltar is an adventure on its own. The only way in? Walking across an actual airport runway! The kids thought it was hilarious watching planes land just a few meters away from us. Once inside, we started to visit the old town since Gibraltar is tiny and better explored on foot.

We hiked up the Rock of Gibraltar instead of taking the cable car, and WOW—the views were unforgettable! From the top, the panoramic views were absolutely jaw-dropping. We could see Spain stretching to the north, the vast Mediterranean Sea to the east, and even the distant shores of Morocco across the Strait of Gibraltar. One of the coolest stops along the way was the Skywalk, a glass platform that juts out over the cliffs, offering one of the most breathtaking perspectives in Gibraltar.

And then… the monkeys happened. The famous Barbary macaques, the only wild monkey population in Europe, were everywhere—climbing on railings, leaping between trees, and occasionally eyeing our backpacks for snacks. Legend has it that as long as these monkeys remain on the Rock, Gibraltar will stay under British rule. Tip: Keep a tight grip on your belongings—these cheeky little creatures are expert pickpockets!

No visit to Gibraltar is complete without classic British fish & chips. We wandered down to Main Street, where British and Spanish cultures collide. We couldn’t resist trying classic British fish & chips—there’s something surreal about enjoying this iconic dish under the warm Spanish sun!

Gibraltar is a quirky, culture-blending gem that totally amazes us. It’s British, but not quite… Spanish, but different… and absolutely unforgettable. It’s a melting pot of history, culture, and adventure—all packed into just 6.7 square kilometers. If you’re road-tripping through southern Spain, don’t skip this unique corner of Europe!
