1. The canton of Vaud is the third largest of the Swiss cantons by population and fourth by size.
2. Along the lakes, Vaud was inhabited in prehistoric times. Later, the Celtic tribe of the Helvetii inhabited the area. The tribe was defeated by Caesar's troops in 58 BC and as a consequence the Romans settled the area. In 27 BC the state of Civitas Helvetiorum was established around the capital of Avenches (Aventicum).
3. Lausanne is the capital city and biggest town of the canton of Vaud. The municipality Lausanne has a population of about 140,000, making it the fourth largest city in Switzerland, with the entire agglomeration area having 420,000 inhabitants (as of March 2015).
4. The International Olympic Committee is a non-governmental sports organisation based in Lausanne. Created by Pierre de Coubertin and Demetrios Vikelas in 1894, it is the authority responsible for organising the modern Summer and Winter Olympic Games.

7. Avenches is a Swiss municipality in the canton of Vaud. The establishment of the Roman settlement of Aventicum, which became the capital of the province, took place around 15-13 B.C.
