The Griffith Observatory stands as a testament to one man's remarkable vision to make astronomy accessible to everyone. Since opening its doors in 1935, this Art Deco masterpiece has become the world's most visited public observatory, perched majestically on Mount Hollywood with sweeping views of Los Angeles below. During World War II, it served a crucial role training pilots in celestial navigation, and later helped prepare Apollo astronauts for their lunar missions. The observatory welcomes millions of visitors to gaze through its famous 12-inch Zeiss telescope and explore the cosmos through its engaging exhibits and planetarium shows.
The Griffith Observatory isn't just a scientific landmark—it's a bonafide Hollywood star in its own right. While serving as LA's window to the cosmos since 1935, this Art Deco masterpiece has played pivotal roles in countless films, most famously in "Rebel Without a Cause" (1955) with James Dean's iconic knife fight scene and planetarium sequence. More recently, it dazzled audiences in "La La Land" where Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling literally danced among the stars.
Thank you to Welsh immigrant Griffith J. Griffith, who left funds in his will to make a public observatory making astronomy accessible to all, and to date remains free to all.
