১৯৭১ সালে যখন বাংলাদেশের জনগণের ওপর নৃশংস সশস্ত্র আক্রমণ চলছিল, তখন জোয়ান বায়েজ লিখেছিলেন ‘দ্য স্টোরি অব বাংলাদেশ’ গান। এই গানে ঢাকা বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের ঘুমন্ত ছাত্রদের ওপর পাকিস্তানের সেনাবাহিনীর বর্বর হত্যাকাণ্ডের বর্ণনা রয়েছে।

জোয়ান বায়েজের ‘দ্য স্টোরি অব বাংলাদেশ’ গানটি পরে অ্যালবাম বা সিডিতে ‘সং অব বাংলাদেশ’ নামে প্রকাশিত হয়েছে।
বাংলাদেশের স্বাধীনতাসংগ্রামের সমর্থনে জোয়ান বায়েজের গান ‘দ্য স্টোরি অব বাংলাদেশ’ আজও আমাদের অনুপ্রাণিত করে। গানটির গীতিকার ও সুরকার ছিলেন জোয়ান বায়েজ নিজেই। গানটি গেয়েছেনও তিনি।

প্রতিবাদী শিল্পী জোয়ান বায়েজ শিল্পী বব ডিলান ও জর্জ হ্যারিসনদের সঙ্গে ‘দ্য কনসার্ট ফর বাংলাদেশ’-এ অংশ না নিলেও বাংলাদেশে পাকিস্তানি সেনাবাহিনীর নিদারুণ হত্যাযজ্ঞ তাঁর হৃদয়কে গভীরভাবে স্পর্শ করেছিল। জোয়ান বায়েজ তাই লিখেছিলেন এক হৃদয়-নিংড়ানো সংগীতালেখ্য।

জোয়ান বায়েজ ষাটের দশকের শুরু থেকেই একজন প্রতিবাদী শিল্পী হিসেবে জনপ্রিয় হয়ে ওঠেন। সে সময়ে মার্কিন যুক্তরাষ্ট্রে মার্টিন লুথার কিংয়ের নেতৃত্বে কৃষ্ণাঙ্গদের নাগরিক অধিকারের যে বৃহৎ আন্দোলন গড়ে উঠেছিল, তাতে তিনি সক্রিয় ছিলেন। একইভাবে দেশে ও বিদেশে মানবাধিকার, বন্দী মুক্তি এবং যুদ্ধবিরোধী আন্দোলনের সঙ্গে অত্যন্ত ঘনিষ্ঠভাবে যুক্ত হয়েছিলেন।

সেই কীংবদন্তী শিল্পীর সেই মহান গানটি আজ আমার সংগীত পুনর্বিন্যাসে আপনাদের মাঝে তুলে ধরলাম।
