The total length is 170.267 kilometers. The entire line is built to the standard of a two-way four-lane expressway, with a design speed of 80 kilometers per hour and a roadbed width of 24.5 meters. Construction started in May 2015 and the entire line was opened to traffic on December 31, 2020.

Wenma Expressway is a major channel out of Sichuan Province connecting Tibet to the west and Qinghai and Xinjiang to the northwest.
