Two university students who were trapped in darkness between rapidly rising seawater and the cliffs on Penarth beach were rescued earlier this year, thanks to a well-placed 999 call.
Alex and George had planned to spend a sunny afternoon by walking from one end of the beach to the pier before making the journey back, but they discovered the tide was moving faster than they could and they became completely cut off.
They began to lose visibility as the sun set and with no clear route back they attempted to scale the unstable cliff face, quickly realising it was too dangerous.
Recognising they were in real danger, the pair called 999 and asked for the Coastguard. Using an app on his smartphone, George was able to provide HM Coastguard with coordinates to their position which allowed them to be easily
Always check the tide times before heading to the coast, be aware of your nearest exit points, and take a fully charged mobile phone. It could save your life.
If you get trapped by the tide, try to find a safe location and call 999 and ask for the Coastguard.
