In this session, I look at the balance sheet, the accountants record of what a company owns and owes and examine the rules that govern different asset types. In the process, I will argue that there are inconsistencies in how fixed assets get recorded, relative to financial assets, that the biggest intangible asset (goodwill) on a balance sheet is a sham and that shareholders' equity is not just backward looking but flawed.
