In a covid hit year, 2020 will also be remembered by Indian cricket fans when their heart was broken by team blue. Wearing whites, team india scored their lowest in a test innings and lost the match despite having a lead of almost twice their innings total. Here is a list of the 8 totals of under 40 by a team.
No 8: Ireland vs England.
Chasing 182 to win, Ireland fell short by a whopping 143 runs. Stuart Broad and Chris Woakes took 4 and 6 wickets.
No 7: Australia vs England.
Over a 100 years ago, on May 31, 1920 Australia were out within 28 overs on 36 in reply to the 376 posted by England. Wilfred Rhodes took 7 wickets. Aussie opener Victor Trumper scored half the team runs.
No 6: South Africa vs Australia.
The year is 1932. February the 12th. Touring South Africa are out for 36 on the 1st day in Menbourne. Jock Cameron played a captain knock of 11 only. Bret Ironmonger took 5 wickets for only 6 runs. This is one of the rare occasions when a test match is completed in within 2 days.
No 5: India vs Australia.
2020, the year of covid19 and social distancing. Cricket fans missed most of the action through out the year. However, cricket did return in the final months and the fans had something to enjoy. Not so much for Indian fans though. On day 3 of the first match, 19th December 2020, India finished on their lowest score of just 36. Josh Hazzlewood took 5 wickets and none of Indian batesmen could reach double figures. Something very rare for the Indian team of 2020.
No 4: Its April in 1899, the touring side of England came back strongly after conceding a first innings lead of 85 runs to South Africa gave them 246 to chase in final innings. South Africa fell short 210 runs. In their 35 runs, only Albert Powell reached double figures of 11. Schofield Haigh broke their tempo with a six wickets haul. What is with Scofields and breakings ?
No 3: saouth Africa vs England .
If you think South Africa all out on 35 was a record back then?
No, it wasn’t. They missed their own record low of 30 all out set 3 years earlier. In February of 1896, South Africa were out on their lowest score at Port Elizabeth. Chasing a mountain of score in final innings they were out for 30. George Lohmann took 8 wickets including their top scorer Robert Poore who could score only 10.
No 2: South Africa vs England.
Fast forward to 1924 and Sauth Africa almost broke their own record of lowest score of 30. In the summer of 1924 at Birmingham, South Africa are out on 30 in reply to England’s first innings total of 438. Arthur Gilligan took 6 wickets . None of South Africans could reach double figures. Infact the top score of 11 came in extras. They were asked to follow on but fell short 18 runs to avoid an inning’s defeat.
No 1: New Zealand vs England.
In March 1955, it New Zealand getting destroyed by a touring England in Auckland. Scoring 200 in 1st innings, they could only score 26 in the 2nd innings. Bert Sutcliffe missed a half century in 1st innings by 1 run could score only 11 in the 2nd innings. No other kiwi batsmen reached double figures. With an 8 balls over, they took 27 overs to score 26. In today’s world that is 36 overs.
The New Zealand lowest total of 26 is still the lowest. Thank you for watching.
