Toei Subway E Ōedo Line (Line 12)

Tokyo is one of our favourite big cities, not least because it has two metro systems! One, the Toei subway, is owned by the city government. The other, Tokyo Metro, is jointly owned by the city and national governments. Whichever you travel on trains are fast, efficient and very clean.

One of the interesting aspects of the system is the ‘through running’ of other companies’ trains through the metro tunnels to destinations (even other cities) further afield.

We travelled on each line and here’s what we saw in 2015 and 2024 – including some now-retired trains.

Line 1 – (A) Asakusa line – Toei Subway
Line 2 – (H) Hibiya line – Tokyo Metro
Line 3 – (G) Ginza line – Tokyo Metro
Line 4 – (M) Marunouchi line – Tokyo Metro
Line 5 – (T) Tozai line – Tokyo Metro
Line 6 – (I) Mita line – Toei Subway
Line 7 – (N) Namboku line – Tokyo Metro
Line 8 – (Y) Yūrakuchō line – Tokyo Metro
Line 9 – (C) Chiyoda line – Tokyo Metro
Line 10 – (S) Shinjuku line – Toei Subway
Line 11 – (Z) Hanzōmon line – Tokyo Metro
Line 12 – (E) Ōedo line – Toei Subway
