Today we'll add a compensator to my Fessenden that I've been wanting to do for a while. If you're not familiar with compensators or you're a beginner steeler I definitely recommend watching the whole video. There's several things in here I wish I had known when I was starting out. I truly believe that understanding how pedal steel mechanics work is essential to being a great player. We'll briefly talk about cabinet drop. There are of course other factors that lead to strings being detuned, but for sake of time we'll focus on cabinet flex. Then we'll talk about ways to tune to avoid most of the problems of cabinet drop. Both of these discussions will lead us to when and why compensators are needed. Then we'll from start to finish add a compensator to the 1st string of my Fessenden. If you have the parts, feel free to follow along!
