In this episode, we break the ground and begin digging the foundations for both the staff quarters and the cottage. This is one of the biggest milestones so far in my journey of building a home in Zimbabwe while living abroad.
After buying the land, drilling a borehole, building a cabin, clearing the site, and putting in the septic tank system — it’s finally time to start building! I chose to use manual labour instead of machinery so I could put money directly into people’s pockets in a tough economy, while also saving costs.
In this video, I share:
🏗️ Why I used manual labour instead of hiring a digger
💵 Labour cost breakdown (pegging, digging, footing – $1 500 total)
🧱 Soil and foundation details (rich red soils + bluestone)
😂 A few funny behind-the-scenes moments on site
If you’re planning to build in Zimbabwe or from abroad, this episode will give you a real-world look at what to expect in the foundation stage — the challenges, the savings, and the lessons learned.
Don’t forget to like, share, and subscribe if you’re following the journey. It really helps keep this series going!
