Art History major Madi Goetzke (OC 2021) presents "Emotion Become Form: Reviewing the Allen Memorial Art Museum’s Fon Bocio," a talk analyzing the materials, history, and theory of the Allen's "Fon bocio." The wooden figure, likely from Benin or Togo, is layered with strikingly modern and spiritually symbolic elements including a wooden tool, metal cord, and padlocks. Shrouded in layers of cultural secrecy and a complicated provenance, the figure perplexes while also challenging widespread ideas of fetishism in West African objects. Goetzke is the recipient of the 2021 AMAM Student Paper Award.
