Japan’s ruling Liberal Democratic Party elected Sanae Takaichi as its leader on October 4, 2025, paving the way for her to become the country’s first female prime minister. Takaichi, whose role model is former British prime minister Margaret Thatcher, is known for her conservative stance and hawkish foreign policy outlook.
