Tractor Pulling 18-Cylinder Aeroplane Radial Engine: Curtiss-Wright R3350 32W Twin Cyclone 💥 SOUND!

I'm pleased to show you a world apart in Tractor Pulling; the one made up of vehicles using 18-cylinder radial engines of aeronautical origin. Almost all of them use the Curtiss-Wright R3350 32W Twin Cyclone engine, and, fortunately, there are some of these tractors in Europe. I have collected the material available filmed in recent years; you can see 5 different specimens in action. Don't miss the Italian standard-bearer Joker, followed by the Austrian Lucky Star, Luxembourgers Wild Star & Roude Leiw Junior, and the German Boomerang. Taking a look at the technical aspects, we discover that the Curtiss-Wright R3350 32W Twin Cyclone engine is the engine used at the time on the Boeing B-29 Superfortress or Lockheed C-121 "Super Constellation" aircraft. Consisting of 18 cylinders spread over 2 stars with 9 cylinders each, it generates a displacement of 55,000cc. The power can vary from 3,500hp to 4,000hp depending on the modifications and the percentage of aviation petrol mixture cut with methanol; in the Roude Léiw Junior model, the conversion to methanol is very high. These engines have an exhaust gas energy recovery system called Turbocompound; in the Twin-Cyclone model, there are 3, each one covers 6 cylinders. In practice, the gases in the exhaust ducts of the cylinders are pushed over the turbines connected by a viscous joint to the crankshaft. This increases the number of crankshaft rpm thanks to the energy of the burnt gases.
I find the most spectacular application in tractor pulling races in the radial engine; the start-up, sound, and flames clearly visible in night races are a spectacular and irresistible combination. Enjoy! 😉

Ho il piacere di mostravi un mondo a parte nel Tractor Pulling, quello formato dei mezzi che impiegano motori radiali da 18 cilindri di provenienza aeronautica. La quasi totalità di loro impiega il propulsore Curtiss-Wright R3350 32W Twin Cyclone ed in Europa, fortunatamente, esistono alcuni di questi trattori. Nel video ho raccolto il materiale a disposizione filmato negli ultimi anni; potete vedere in azione ben 5 differenti esemplari. Non manca il portacolori Italiano Joker, seguito dall'Austriaco Lucky Star, dai Lussemburghesi Wild Star & Roude Leiw Junior ed infine il tedesco Boomerang. Dando uno sguardo agli aspetti tecnici scopriamo che il motore Curtiss-Wright R3350 32W Twin Cyclone è il motore impiegato all'epoca sugli aerei Boeing B-29 Superfortress oppure Lockheed C- 121 "Super Constellation". Composto da 18 cilindri ripartiti su 2 stelle con 9 cilindri ciascuna genera una cilindrata di 55.000cc. La potenza può variare dai 3.500cv ai 4.000cv a seconda delle modifiche e della percentuale di miscela di benzina avio tagliata con il metanolo, nel modello Roude Léiw Junior la conversione verso il metanolo è molto spinta. Questi propulsori hanno un sistema di recupero dell'energia dei gas di scarico chiamato Turbocompound; nel modello Twin-Cyclone ce ne sono 3, ogn'uno copre 6 cilindri. In pratica i gas nei condotti di scarico dei cilindri vengono spinti sopra delle turbine collegate mediante un giunto viscoso all’albero motore. Si ha così un'aumento del numero di giri dell'albero motore grazie all’energia dei gas combusti.
Personalmente trovo nel propulsore radiale l'applicazione più spettacolare nelle gare del tractor pulling; l'accensione, il suono, le fiammette ben visibili nelle gare notturne sono un'insieme spettacolare ed irresistibile. Buona visione! 😉
