Alcatraz Night Tour - Pier 39 - San Francisco

The night tour to Alcatraz Island is a highly recommendable experience in San Francisco. Starting close to the famous pier 39, which houses a colony of sea lions that made the pier their home after an earthquake in 1989. The prison is one of the more famous tourist places in San Francisco.

The tour starts with a few stories about the island and its history during the voyage to Alcatraz island. Here, you will make your way up to the cell house and pick up an audio-guide.

Within the cell-block, you can experience a bit of how it must have felt to be a priosoner at alcatraz, entering a regular cell or even the hole were prisoners were kept in the dark in solitary confinement.

The prison museum also houses the props used in the most famous escape attempt, which might even have been successful.

A highlight of the tour is the demonstration of the mechanical door mechanism. It allows to control an entire row of 20 cells, selecting individual doors or all doors at the same time.
