In this video (Part 5b), we explain the Early voltage effect and use graphs and operating-region analysis to show why a BJT is not an ideal current source.
Using characteristic curves and whiteboard illustrations, we clearly explain the cutoff, forward-active, and saturation regions of a transistor, and show how collector voltage influences collector current due to the Early effect.
We then examine how emitter degeneration improves current-source behavior — and why this improvement comes with important drawbacks, including reduced voltage headroom and reduced gain, especially when no bypass capacitor is used.
This video connects device behavior, circuit design, and practical trade-offs in a clear and intuitive way.
