Life Cycle Assessment – Fairphone 5 LCA - Sarah-Jane Baur, David Sánchez & Nils F. Nissen

At the second Green ICT Camp 2025 in Nuremberg, Sarah-Jane Baur and David Sánchez, research fellows in the Life Cycle Modeling group at ‪@FraunhoferIZM‬ , together with Nils F. Nissen, Head of Department Environmental and Reliability Engineering at IZM, gave a highly relevant and practice-oriented talk on Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) – using the Fairphone 5 as a real-world case study.

The session walked participants through:
🔹 Chapter 1: What is Fairphone and why do LCAs matter for sustainable design?
🔹 Chapter 2: How the LCA was conducted: data, modeling, and methodological insights
🔹 Chapter 3: Understanding the results: how to read and interpret an LCA
🔹 Chapter 4: A brief introduction to ecodesign and the 5C method

💡 This session offered a deep dive into evaluating environmental impact across a product’s entire lifecycle – and showed how LCA is essential to making ICT truly green.
