Today, I'm excited to share with you my experiences and the invaluable lessons I learned from living abroad in Sweden. Whether you're considering moving abroad, studying in Sweden, or just curious about what life in Sweden is like, this video will provide you with insights and tips that can help you navigate your own journey.
Living abroad is an adventure that comes with its unique set of challenges and rewards. In this video, I'll delve into the five key lessons I learned while living in Sweden, touching on everything from cultural philosophies to practical tips for making the most of your time in this beautiful country.
One of the most important lessons I learned is encapsulated in the Swedish saying, "There is no such thing as bad weather, only bad clothes." This saying underscores the importance of focusing on what you can control. Instead of complaining about the weather, Swedes dress appropriately and continue with their activities. This philosophy taught me to adopt a proactive mindset, focusing on solutions rather than problems. If you're moving to Sweden, adopting this attitude will help you make the most of every situation.
The concept of 'sisu', borrowed from the Finnish, is another lesson that had a profound impact on me. Sisu represents resilience, determination, and an inner strength that pushes you to keep going even when things get tough. Living in a new country presents numerous challenges, from navigating bureaucracy to dealing with homesickness. Embracing sisu helped me stay resilient and determined, reminding me that perseverance is key to overcoming obstacles.
Living in Sweden also introduced me to the idea of 'lagom', which means "just the right amount". This philosophy encourages balance and moderation in all aspects of life. In Sweden, you'll find that people strive for a balanced lifestyle, whether it's in their work, diet, or social interactions. Learning to keep it lagom helped me prioritize my well-being and avoid the extremes, fostering a more harmonious and content way of living.
Of course, no discussion about Swedish culture would be complete without mentioning 'fika'. Fika is more than just a coffee break; it's a cultural institution that emphasizes the importance of taking a pause to enjoy a cup of coffee or tea, often accompanied by pastries. More importantly, it's a time to connect with friends, colleagues, and even strangers. Embracing the fika culture taught me the value of slowing down, taking breaks, and prioritizing social connections. If you're moving to Sweden, be sure to incorporate fika into your daily routine!
Finally, the Danish concept of 'hygge' also found its way into my life in Sweden. Hygge is about creating a cozy, warm atmosphere and enjoying the good things in life with good people. This concept helped me appreciate the small, simple pleasures that bring comfort and joy. Whether it's lighting candles on a dark winter evening or spending time with loved ones, hygge reminded me to create and cherish moments of warmth and contentment.
Living abroad in Sweden has been an enriching and transformative experience. These five lessons – focusing on what you can control, embracing sisu, keeping it lagom, enjoying fika, and creating hygge – have shaped my time here and made it incredibly rewarding. If you're considering moving to Sweden or studying in Sweden, I hope these insights will help you prepare for your own adventure.
