Question From Q&A in recent Keynote for the Doctors For Nutrition in Australia. @doctorsfornutrition
I love opportunities to train doctors so they can help more patients get healthy!
Question: How do we prove to our patients they won’t get protein deficiency from a plant-based diet?
An easy answer for doctors is that they can actually TEST it for the patient and prove it that way 😉.
But truly it is important to understand there is no disease specifically for protein deficiency.
Now you might say what about Kwashiorkor and Marasmus? Those are not actually diseases of just dietary protein deficiency, but tragic diseases of starvation in very poor underdeveloped countries.
With Kwashiorkor, a child who is weaned from his mother so she can feed a new baby is fed a sparse diet of porridge made from watery grains that is insufficient to support his growth, organ function and health. It literally translates to “rejected one”. It is a protein-deficient diet, but it is also extremely nutrient deficient and truly a food deficient diet. These little ones are starving once they no longer get the nutrients from mother’s milk.
Marasmus translates to “starvation” and is also a disease of severe malnourishment from starvation.
When people are fed sufficient amounts of food, plants or otherwise, they will not have these conditions.
In over 20 years in medicine I have never seen either of these conditions.
The only time you see low protein markers in a medical setting outside of countries with these severe starvation levels, is 1) from starvation 2) Kidney failure 3) high inflammation. NEVER from someone eating plants.
If the doctors were asking, I thought you’d like to know too!
