Maths Isacson’s keynote, “Reuse and Disuse of Factories and Large Industrial Areas – Ten Types of Sustainable and Unsustainable Transformations” , traced fifty years of diverse responses to the closure of industrial sites. Drawing on study visits, fieldwork, and archival research, he presented ten distinct ways communities and institutions have reused, abandoned, or demolished factories, illustrated with cases from across Sweden. Isacson, Professor Emeritus of Economic History at Uppsala University and a leading scholar of industrial society and working life, showed how these choices reveal shifting social, economic, and heritage values. His lecture highlighted the long-term consequences of different transformation strategies and underscored the importance of understanding industrial heritage within broader processes of change.
