Exeter University Singers perform Paul Mealor’s, ‘Now Sleeps the Crimson Petal’, a fantastic example of choral music offering reincarnation to aged texts. Set to Tennyson's sonnet of the same name, this piece was performed at the royal wedding of 2011, with a change of text to suit the service, and offers so much to us. The music itself has a sense of tremendous space, which suits our chapel’s acoustic wonderfully, and an almost out-of-body nature, which makes the performance both mysterious and affirming. Harmonically challenging, and with such dynamic diversity, this was a real step-up in the choir’s ability to both approach a piece, and follow a conductor. It was a privilege conducting this piece, and working with the choir throughout the rehearsal process was a joy - Daniel Maw, Conductor.
We thoroughly enjoyed recording this and we hope you enjoy it!
