This is a timelapse of a walnut, maple, and padauk edge grain cutting board I made. This was filmed over the course of 7 days.
I used 6 walnut turning blanks purchased from Home Depot, a piece of maple and padauk. (I know, I committed the cardinal sin of purchasing hardwood from a big box store).
Before cutting the pieces to length, I mark them with a different colored pencil so I know which piece is which. I rip a clean edge on the piece of maple and padauk, then I cut two thin strips of maple. To ensure a tight glue joint, I ripped clean edges along the pieces of wood that were not fitting together seamlessly.
After clamping and gluing the pieces together I used a block plane and paint scraper to remove excess glue and trim up the wood before sending it through the planer.
Using shims and hot glue I secure the cutting board to my planer flattening sled and plane one side flat.
After planing both sides of the cutting board, I rip one straight edge on the table saw using my straight edge/jointer jig and rip the opposite edge.
Once I have two parallel edges on my cutting board, I use my miter gauge to trim the ends of the cutting board.
Now that all four sides are square, I add juice grooves and an 8th inch roundover. I set my miter gauge to 45 degrees and cut off the edges - later I will sand these to create a rounded corner.
Last but not least - I water pop the board and sand. Covering the entire board with pencil marks to ensure every inch gets sanded I begin with 80 grit and progress through 120, 180, 220, 400. After sanding with 400 grit I water pop the board again to raise the grain and sand with 400 grit once more.
My final step on the cutting board is to sand all side with 800 grit sandpaper - I like doing this because it leaves the board feeling super smooth.
Then I cut a 15 degree groove in a piece of wood (I glued and planed off camera) to create a stand.
Off camera, I coated the cutting board and stand in Tung oil.
