In 1526, the First Battle of Panipat changed the course of Indian history. Babur, with just 20,000 soldiers, defeated Delhi Sultan Ibrahim Lodi's army of over 100,000 troops — a victory not of numbers, but of strategy, innovation, and discipline.

Babur introduced new warfare tactics to Indian soil, particularly the Tulughma formation and the use of cannons — something unseen in Indian battles before. Inspired by Turkish and Persian warfare, Babur divided his army into left, right, and center divisions, with mobile cavalry flanks and defensive barricades using carts (Araba). Behind these carts were placed Ottoman-style cannons.

As Lodi's massive army advanced, Babur’s cannons caused chaos and panic among the war elephants and foot soldiers. The loud explosions and smoke disrupted traditional war formations. Babur then used his flanking cavalry to encircle the enemy forces.

On the other side, Ibrahim Lodi’s army, though large, was poorly coordinated and relied on outdated methods of direct combat with elephants and infantry charges. It lacked the unity and leadership needed to counter Babur’s modern, mobile, and calculated attacks.

Babur’s soldiers were fewer in number, but well-trained and disciplined. Their use of firearms, battlefield positioning, and psychological warfare gave them a clear advantage.

The result? Babur's triumph marked the beginning of the Mughal Empire in India, replacing the Delhi Sultanate and ushering in a new era in South Asian history.
