How Does The Music Industry Work? And What Should YOU focus on with your music?

When explaining how the music industry works, I really like to focus on the biggest struggles for independent musicians:

The biggest challenges when it comes to the music industry are making an income from your music, growing your audience and fanbase, and lastly, accomplishing all this without getting lost, frustrated, and discouraged by the process.

In this video, I set the stage for how I approach my career in music. For my own career, I've simplified the music industry into three main categories that I focus on: Audience Growth, Music Monetization, and the Technical Nuts and Bolts of the music industry.

Thinking of it in these three categories helps me find clarity, and direction as to what actually matters. If you don't have an audience, then you don't have any traction. Once you have traction, you need to build your revenue streams. And lastly, there is a technological and strategic skillset that is required in order to complete the circle of success.

Whether you're trying to grow your fanbase on Spotify, Soundcloud, YouTube, or Instagram, it really is a matter of making sure you create more content than just the songs you write. Building a fanbase for your music involves being very public and building a fanbase from scratch requires lots of content.
