Blood Mountain Shelter was one of those special historical landmarks that I looked forward to visiting. Climbing “Picnic Rock,” a giant boulder equally famous as the iconic shelter it sits next to, affords breathtaking views and is an excellent photo opportunity. The shelter was built by the organization: Civilian Conservation Corps, brainchild of President Franklin D. Roosevelt, and part of his “New Deal,” providing jobs to young men during the Great Depression.

Besides constructing over 800 nature parks, CCC employees built rural roadways and planted 3 billion trees. Also, support buildings of all shapes and sizes were erected using local trees for lumber and native stone as foundations that blended in with the surrounding environments. Utilizing native resources had numerous benefits: no-cost materials, their removal cleared additional acres of land for roads or trails, and these materials didn’t have to be transported over long distances - a very efficient system like that used by frontiersmen.

Over the years, Blood Mountain Shelter had weathered and decayed, its roof made weaker by people jumping onto it from Picnic Rock, and every single stick of wood trim (shutters, windows sills and door frames) had all been sacrificed by visitors needing to fuel the fireplace on cold nights. In 2010, the shelter was restored. Thirty-two round trips were made by trained pack animals, horses and donkeys to deliver pre-cut rafters and joists that were assembled, on site, using only hand tools. End excerpt.
