Double Hoop Punch Needle Art + How to Create Blank Space in an Art Piece

The process of creating empty space in a work of art is an art within itself. Having the 'eye', seeing the balance of color, light and dark and knowing how to balance and fix what's missing is the part of creating art that makes me feel special. The vulnerability of looking at a piece, knowing something is missing is an uncomfortable feeling. Being brave to look further, keep going, remove and start again can be a very lost and vulnerable feeling. But the feeling of pride and accomplishment after an art piece is completed is just the best feeling. This feeling is what makes us feel alive. Without the vulnerability, the uncomfortable unease, the feeling of failure, we wouldn't be able to feel the highs of pride, accomplishment and aliveness. Challenge yourself to look further, to admit the failure and keep going. I guarantee it is worth all the yucky feelings.

This double hoop technique is a perfect way to play around with empty space. There are so many possibilities. Two big hoops, a weave warp in the empty space, fill in half the space, leave it completely open.

NOTE: BE SURE TO GLUE THE INSIDE HOOP A LOT. THE INSIDE HOOP MAY SLIP IF NOT
ENOUGH GLUE APPLIED. I APPLIED GLUE HEAVILY ALL AROUND THE TOP, BOTTOM AND
OUTER OF THE SMALL HOOP.

INSTRUCTIONS

1. INSERT MONKS CLOTH INTO THE SMALL HOOP. PULL TIGHT USING THE T METHOD.
2. FLIP THE SMALL HOOP OVER AND INSERT FABRIC INTO THE LARGE HOOP. PULL TIGHT
USING THE T METHOD.
3.
APPLY GLUE HEAVILY ON THE INSIDE AND OUTSIDE ON THE BOTTOM OF THE SMALL
HOOP. APPLY GLUE HEAVILY TO THE OUTSIDE ON THE TOP OF THE SMALL HOOP.
4. TRIM FABRIC 1/4" - 1/2" AROUND THE LARGE HOOP. APPLY GLUE TO INSIDE OF THE HOOP
ON THE BACK SIDE. PRESS FABRIC INTO THE GLUE. SEE THE CIRCLE FRAME LESSON FOR
