"Al died peacefully at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, with his wife, Nancy Barile, by his side. He had been battling colon cancer since 2022."

"A pioneer of the straight-edge hardcore movement, Al helped define a generation of angry, idealistic youth with SSD’s explosive debut, The Kids Will Have Their Say — a furious rejection of conformity, corruption, and the numbing party culture of the late ’70s."

"SSD wasn’t just a band — it was a movement. Songs rarely stretched past a minute, but in that minute, Al's guitar hit like a riot. SSD stood for ‘Society System Decontrol,’ and with Al’s vision, they kicked down the doors of mainstream music to make way for raw honesty and rebellion."

"Al started SSD while studying mechanical engineering at Northeastern. He wasn’t in it for fame — he was in it for the truth. Influenced by the Ramones and inspired by Minor Threat, he made a stand: no drugs, no drinking, just pure, unfiltered punk ethos."
