Most people assume that when they pay for 1 liter of gasoline, they get exactly 1 liter—but that’s not always the case. Fuel pumps are supposed to be calibrated and checked by government agencies, but there's actually a legal margin of error, usually around ±0.5%. That means you could be getting slightly less fuel than what you're paying for, and it’s still considered legal. Over time, wear and tear can cause pumps to drift further out of accuracy, especially if they’re not regularly calibrated. If you notice that your fuel seems to run out faster than usual, it's not just in your head. You can report it to your local Weights and Measures Inspector, who’s responsible for checking pump accuracy and protecting consumers. Knowing how it works helps you make sure you're getting every drop you paid for.
