Back to school after one of the hottest summers on record in Europe ☀️
From north to south, recurrent heatwaves have swept the continent all season long. As they become more frequent and intense, cities are under pressure to provide sustainable and reliable ways to keep citizens safe. 🏠
💗In the heart of Paris, a solution has been operating quietly underground for more than 35 years: the city’s #districtcooling system.✨
Because it’s not only croissants and couture that make Paris one of the coolest cities in the world. 🥐
Operated by Fraîcheur de Paris, this is 𝐨𝐧𝐞 𝐨𝐟𝐄𝐮𝐫𝐨𝐩𝐞’𝐬 𝐥𝐚𝐫𝐠𝐞𝐬𝐭 𝐝𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐭 𝐜𝐨𝐨𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐧𝐞𝐭𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐤. It connects 𝐦𝐨𝐫𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐧 900 𝐛𝐮𝐢𝐥𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐬, from iconic sites such as the Louvre and the Grand Palais to schools, hospitals and shopping centres, through 110 𝐤𝐦 𝐨𝐟𝐩𝐢𝐩𝐞𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐬 and 12 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐝𝐮𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐩𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐭𝐬. 😱
💧 By tapping into local resources like the Seine river, the system uses twice less energy and emits half the CO₂ compared to stand alone solutions while avoiding the urban heat island effect. 😎
Paris is expanding connections to new users, including its first hospital, the ophthalmological institution Hôpital national des Quinze-Vingts. Recently, the city also unveiled the first schools to join the network, with one of them already providing a safe learning space for 350 pupils as part of the first six to be connected (as seen in Le Monde this week🔗https://bit.ly/4mFfeZl)
Far from clichés, the French capital proves that sustainable and efficient district cooling really is the cool way to go. The challenge now? Scaling this model across Europe’s cities. 🌍
