We went to the Alana River Cave which is a volcanic lava tube in the Coconino National Forest at 8000 ft elevation near Flagstaff Arizona. The tube is 3/4 of a mile long, and has 30’ high ceilings in places. We spoke to several people who had went the full length of the cave and back. They said it gets very narrow at the end. It was extremely difficult terrain as you were climbing over large rocks. After several hundred feet we realized we were not properly equipped and turned back. Headlamps are really a requirement as is a backpack for supplies. You need your hands free to be able to climb over and around boulders.
