Why can some autistic adults work while others can’t?
Every autistic person is different. Factors like health conditions, burnout, sensory overload, or past discrimination can all affect someone’s ability to work. Autistic people also have varying support needs and communication styles — there’s no one-size-fits-all experience.
It’s not just a question of who can or can’t work—it’s about whether our workplaces are inclusive enough to support different skill levels and working styles. All autistic adults should have the opportunity to work in ways that suit their strengths and needs.
What can employers do?
Listen to autistic employees
Offer accommodations starting at the interview stage
Create a neuroaffirming, inclusive workplace
Autistic people bring valuable strengths like intense focus, pattern recognition, and deep knowledge of special interests that can be a huge asset in many careers.
