Stay safe when working at height by following these step-by-step instructions on how to properly tie off and climb scaffolding or ladders. This guide is based on industry-standard fall protection practices used on construction sites.
🦺 Step 1: Inspect Your Harness
✅ Before use, check all straps, buckles, and stitching for any damage.
✅ Make sure the harness fits snugly but allows free movement.
🪢 Step 2: Attach Your Lanyard or SRL
✅ Connect the lanyard or self-retracting lifeline (SRL) to the D-ring located between your shoulder blades.
✅ Ensure the connector locks securely with no play.
🏗️ Step 3: Identify a Certified Anchor Point
✅ Choose only approved anchor points rated for fall arrest.
✅ Never tie off to scaffolding rails, pipes, or makeshift objects.
🧗 Step 4: Climbing Safely
✅ Maintain three points of contact at all times (two hands + one foot, or two feet + one hand).
✅ Move slowly, facing the ladder or scaffold.
🔒 Step 5: Re-Tie When Moving Higher
✅ As you ascend, always re-attach your lanyard to the next safe anchor before releasing the previous one.
✅ This ensures you are never unclipped at any point.
🚨 Step 6: Final Safety Check
✅ Once positioned, double-check all connections.
✅ Confirm your harness is still snug and your anchor point is secure before starting work.
⚠️ Remember: Fall protection saves lives. Following these steps is not optional—it’s the standard of safety every construction worker must follow.
