Red-knobbed Coot At Wordsworth Water, Millstream Farm | Dullstroom Birding Adventure

This video captures the fascinating Red-knobbed Coot, scientific name Fulica cristata, at Millstream Farm’s Wordsworth Water, filmed from the peaceful bird hide nestled in the reeds and wetlands. The distinctive bird call of the Red-knobbed Coot can be heard throughout, adding a unique soundtrack to this incredible sighting.

The Red-knobbed Coot is a striking waterbird, easily recognisable by the two red knobs on its head, which are more prominent during the breeding season. These coots are found throughout Southern Africa in freshwater habitats and are known for their lively behaviour and strong swimming abilities. Their diet consists mainly of aquatic plants, but they’ve been observed diving to forage for small insects and snails.

At Millstream Farm, located in the birding hotspot of Dullstroom, several pairs of Red-knobbed Coot thrive on the farm’s 20+ dams. Wordsworth Water is a particularly scenic location, offering a haven for birdlife and birdwatchers alike. Sitting quietly in the hide, you can observe not just these active coots but also a variety of other wetland species that make this area so special.
