Dunbar Race Engineering and their Hurco VM10i Machining Centre

Dunbar Race Engineering Ltd offers engineering design, analysis and manufacturing services, calling on the skills of a race wining team, with experience at the highest levels of motorsport.
The company was formed by Duncan Dunbar in 2018, delivering design and reverse engineering services to the motorsport market. Projects include components for historic racing motorcycles and superbikes in addition to parts for internal combustion engines, including high efficiency engines that are targeting the hydrogen market.
In the early days, manufacturing of components designed in-house, would be contracted out. However, it was a natural progression to move the “home workshop” into an industrial unit and invest in a VM10i CNC machining centre from Hurco. In selecting this machine, Duncan Dunbar made sure that he did his research. Hurco was recommended by a former colleague and a visit to the High Wycombe facility followed. Dunbar Race Engineering were looking for more than a machine tool supplier. They were looking for a company with which they could partner, providing support through the early stages of first-time CNC programming and also offering a clear path to more advanced machining capability in the future, when required.
“Nice people to work with and a cracking machine” is how Duncan describes his experience of dealing with Hurco.
In order to make excellent quality parts to fine tolerances, sometimes as tight as 10 microns, Dunbar Race Engineering takes full advantage of both the Hurco build quality and the programming power of the WinMax control. All work, including complex 4-axis jobs are programmed directly at the machine using the verification toolpath graphics to help avoid any potential input mistakes.
Duncan Dunbar’s pedigree started with superbikes and MotoGP, then later with Mercedes AMG, retaining an enthusiasm for all things motorsport. However, he is keen to emphasise that this is not solely a racing company. There is a clear belief that the discipline, drive and innovation that forged a career in motorsport can be applied to deliver design projects and manufacture products for a wide range of mechanical systems. A service that is particularly beneficial for prototype design and manufacture. Additional disciplines, such as inspection and QMS services are offered for one-offs and small batches that are produced.
