Today I ride the BMW R1150RT through Lincolnshire and over the iconic Humber Bridge. Taking 8 years to build the first traffic crossed on 24 June 1981. For 16 years it was the longest suspension bridge in the world, and we had it in Yorkshire!
The main centre span of the bridge is 1410 meters, held up by suspension cables passing over 2 support towers reaching a lofty 155.5 meters above the banks of the River Humber. There is enough wire in the suspension cables to go around the moon more than 6 times!
From bank to bank the roadway is 1.4 miles long, It’s still the UK’s longest single-span suspension bridge and now the eighth longest in the world. It remains the longest in the world that can be crossed on foot or by cycle.
The view from the bridge is superb both up the river Humber and down over Hull to the estuary.
The crossing is free for motorbikes, always a bonus in Yorkshire,
