Taken from the recital given by Jonathan Plowright at the National Gallery of Ireland to celebrate Polish Independence Day, 11th November 2007.
Musicologist Joseph Herter writes: "Written in 1845 and dedicated to the Baroness von Stockhausen, the general appeal of the Barcarolle is the Italian flavor of the Venetian gondolier song with its swaying 12/8 meter. The work is shaped into three sections with the first and third consisting of the cantabile principal theme, harmonized with parallel thirds and sixths. The central section is marked with a modulation from F-sharp Major to A Major, a change of dynamics from loud to sotto voce and the use of triplets in the inner alto voice up to the poco piu mosso. The closing section features the return of the principal theme in the original key, but with rhythmic and melodic modifications, and concludes with a short coda ending fortissimo. Chopins Barcarolle has been frequently compared to his nocturnes because of the similarity of their moods."
