Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is a scientific, eco-friendly, and economical approach to control pests in agriculture.
It involves the combined use of different pest control methods—such as cultural, mechanical, physical, biological, genetic, behavioral, and chemical methods—to keep pest populations below the economic injury level (EIL).
IPM does not aim to completely eliminate pests. Instead, it focuses on managing pests safely and sustainably by understanding pest biology, crop ecology, and natural enemy interactions. Chemical pesticides are used only when necessary and in a judicious manner, reducing environmental pollution and protecting beneficial organisms.
Objectives of IPM:
Reduce crop losses due to pests
Minimize pesticide use
Protect environment and human health
Maintain ecological balance
Ensure sustainable crop production
IPM is widely recommended for sustainable agriculture and forms an important part of modern pest management practices.
