Charge is one of the most fundamental properties of matter just like mass which has the ability to create its own field around it just as mass has its own gravitational field around it. Just like the electric field, It is also defined and it is a scalar quantity. SI unit of electric potential is Volts. It is defined as the amount of work done by an external agent to bring a unit charge from infinity to the point at which the potential is to be calculated.
