Jim Fusco tackles the age-old question: what's the BEST way to record electric guitar? In this video, he compares four popular recording methods: DI (Direct Input), Cab Sim (Cabinet Simulator), Mic'd Cab (Microphoned Cabinet), and IR (Impulse Response).
Discover the pros and cons of each method:
DI (Direct Input): Learn about the simplicity and clarity of recording direct, and when it's the right choice.
Cab Sim (Cabinet Simulator): Explore the convenience and versatility of amp and cabinet modeling plugins.
Mic'd Cab (Microphoned Cabinet): Understand the classic technique of using microphones to capture the true sound of a guitar amp and cabinet.
IR (Impulse Response): Dive into the world of impulse responses and how they can recreate the sound of real cabinets.
Whether you're a seasoned recording engineer or just starting out, this video will help you understand the nuances of each method and choose the best one for your needs.

What's the best way to record guitars that sounds the most like it sounds out loud in real life? That's the question I'm looking to answer in this video and I need your help. I play both my Gibson Les Paul Standard 60's (in gorgeous iced tea finish) and Fender Deluxe Player's Stratocaster into my Marshall Origin 20 amp (with matching 2x12 speaker cabinet) and the record it using four methods:
Mic the cabinet using a Shure PG57 microphone
DI out from the dedicated DI output jack on the back of the Marshall Origin 20
Cabinet simulation that's built into the Torpedo Captor hooked up to my recording interface (the Tascam US-16x08) via XLR cable
IR (input response) method using the Torpedo Captor and into the interface via TRS balanced cable and using a matching Marshall cab sim in the Torpedo WallOfSound (WoS) plugin
This is all recorded with Logic Pro X and minimal processing was done to the signals- no pedals, effects, reverb or anything else- just tried to make the volume about the same for each.
I'd love to hear how you record your guitars and if you prefer a sound that's as close to how it sounds "out loud" through the amp or a more "recorded" sound (whatever that might mean to you!).
