Eugen Jochum was the ultimate Bruckner conductor. He recorded the complete symphonies twice, once on DG and once for EMI (with the Staatskapelle Dresden). Both sets are thoroughly recommended, but this first one has always had a special place in the hearts of collectors, if only for nostalgic reasons. It was the first complete cycle, and although it was later overshadowed by Herbert von Karajan's highly publicized recordings for the same label, it's interesting to note that Jochum is still in print (for now), while Karajan is not. Jochum brought to Bruckner's music a human warmth and lyricism that only served to highlight the music's spiritual qualities. He preferred flexible speeds that never dragged, and the result is a uniquely complete and exciting view of the composer: in short, a musical testament. --David Hurwitz
"As with previous releases, the sound quality remains the same. The enhanced audio quality allows for a clearer understanding of Jochum's musical intent, highlighting the precise movement and density of the bass strings, the interplay of the harmonies, overtones, and ambience of each instrument. The high-quality digitization and mastering by Emil Berliner Studios has further enhanced the accuracy, resulting in a beautiful balance that is not overly biased toward the high frequencies heard on previous CDs. Once again, we returned to the source and aimed to recreate this magnificent recording in a way that allows listeners to appreciate it once again.
For this reissue, we traced back to the original analog master tapes in the UK and digitized them with exceptional audio quality. As always, we used the highest-quality Flat Master, resulting in exceptional presence. Texture and stereo positioning are astonishingly clear and crisp, and with the added benefit of DSD, we have reproduced an unprecedented level of sound quality. To produce this disc, the original analog master tapes were physically maintained and restored in Germany, then digitized (PCM) at high quality (192/24). The mastering process was painstakingly completed specifically for this series by the label's dedicated engineers at Emil Berliner Studios in Berlin. The SA-CD layer offers high-definition master sound. The CD layer also utilizes the latest digital and mastering techniques, setting it apart from conventional recordings. This series features original jacket designs and a new preface by Daisuke Hirose. This 25th installment of the "Vintage SA-CD Collection" will feature three titles.
